Thirty years ago I studied shifting cultivation and forest
cover changes in the Selva Lacandona, Chiapas, in the south
of Mexico. In the study I predicted that this unique
rainforest near the border to Guatemala would be destroyed
within ten years. During a trip to the area in early 2010 I
came to the conclusion that approximately 85% of the forest
have disappeared. With the establishment of a laboratory for
tissue culture and – on the mid term – of an environmental
education centre we hope to create alternatives to the
destruction of the forest and to cattle raising.......
